The Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) is asking for
Expressions of Interest for Membership of the Commonwealth Secretariat Arbitral
Tribunal (CSAT). Details about the Tribunal can be found at
thecommonwealth.org/tribunal

The Members of CSAT are officeholders selected by the Commonwealth Governments
rather than employees of the Commonwealth Secretariat. It is primarily an honorary
appointment, and a small annual gratuity is paid, as well as expenses.
The time commitment required in the position is largely influenced by the caseload of
the Tribunal. Tribunal Members may reasonably expect to work for five days each year
on a case together with several additional days for other judicial activities. Members
serve a term of four years. The judgments are posted to the Tribunal’s website.

The FCDO is looking to nominate a candidate, who will be selected by the Member
Governments of the Commonwealth through the Commonwealth Secretariat.
The ideal candidate must be a UK national of high moral character and must:

a) have held, hold or be qualified to hold high judicial office in a Commonwealth
country; or
b) be jurisconsults of recognised competence with experience as such for a period of
not less than ten years.

In addition to these criteria, it would be desirable for candidates to have significant
experience and knowledge of employment law, public and administrative law and/or
international law.

Candidates should submit an expression of interest setting out, how you meet the
eligibility criteria, why you are interested in the role and why you would be a good
candidate (500-word max). Please send your EoI, along with an up to date CV (3 pages max), to
EASU.LegalAdvisers@fcdo.gov.uk by 1400GMT on Friday 2 January 2026.
