ALBA is pleased to host a roundtable discussion on policies and practical considerations for barristers taking or returning after parental leave, and issues raised for parents practising at the Bar.

The event will be held at Serjeants’ Inn Chambers (85 Fleet St) on Tuesday 26 November 2024 at 5pm.

The roundtable will be chaired by Bridget Dolan KC (Serjeants’ Inn), and we are delighted to be joined by:

  1. Rachel Krys, Equality & Diversity Consultant at the Bar Council
  2. Virginia Cooper, Bevan Brittan LLP
  3. Natasha Barnes, 1 Crown Office Row
  4. Raj Desai, Matrix Chambers
  5. Lucy Barbet, former Senior Clerk and current Development & Compliance Director at 11KBW

The event is intended to focus on the issues raised for barristers returning to practice at the Bar after parental leave and more generally for parents practising at the Bar. The expert panel will explore a range of themes from a number of perspectives, including the experiences of those returning to the Bar and the challenges they face, insights from the clerks room, and the expectations of clients. The discussion will examine a number of topics ranging from the policies that might be available to address the issues faced by barristers returning after parental leave (such as financial support or loans, rent holidays, and tiered payment schemes); strategies to retain cases or maintain one’s practice after going on parental leave; the role of the clerks; and how to promote best practice at the public law Bar (including encouraging publication of parental leave policies in order to achieve greater transparency at the Bar).

Contributions to the discussion from attendees (both in-person and online) are encouraged.

The roundtable will commence at 5:00 pm, to be followed by a drinks reception from 6:15pm, to which all participants are warmly invited.

The event is free and and available to ALBA members only.

Registration will close at 6pm on Sunday, 24 November.
