ALBA is pleased to host a hybrid seminar to discuss the issues concerning Parliamentary privilege which arise in practice in public law litigation.

Parliamentary privilege has been an issue in a wide range of recent judicial review cases, including cases in the fields of human rights, immigration, asylum accommodation, leasehold reform, and environment, and high profile cases such as R (Liberty) v SSHD [2025] EWCA Civ 571 and R (ALR) v Chancellor of Exchequer [2025] EWHC 1467 (Admin).

The seminar will cover the basis for Parliamentary privilege and why it matters, the up-to-date position on Parliamentary privilege from the recent case law, and practical issues which arise where Parliamentary privilege could be relevant and how to navigate them.

The speakers at the event all have considerable experience of Parliamentary privilege matters in practice.  They will be:

Sarah Hannett KC, Matrix Chambers

Saira Salimi, Speaker’s Counsel, House of Commons

Martin Westgate KC, Doughty Street Chambers

The seminar will be chaired by Lord Justice Holgate.

The event will be held at Francis Taylor Building, Temple, with registration at 5:45pm, for a 6pm start.  It will be possible to attend the event either in-person or online.  The event will be followed by drinks and nibbles from around 7:15pm.

The event is free and available to ALBA members only (including online attendance).
