ALBA is pleased to host a roundtable discussion on the gender income gap in public law, to discuss the cause(s) of this gap and practical steps that can be taken to address it.

We are delighted to be joined by:

  1. Joanne Clement KC, 11KBW and Vice Chair of ALBA
  2. Laura Hughes, Head of Public Law at Browne Jacobson
  3. Sian Wilkins, Senior Clerk (Civil) at Doughty Street Chambers
  4. Kelly Quinn KC, Bankside Chambers (Auckland) and member of the New Zealand Bar Association’s Diversity and Inclusion Committee

Recent Bar Council reports have confirmed that

  • Women are earning less than men across all experience levels at the self-employed Bar. Junior women are earning 76% of what junior men were earning. Women silks are earning on average 72% of their male colleagues’ median gross earnings
  • Earnings gaps persist across every post-qualification experience (PQE) band. The highest earning men are consistently earning more than the highest earning women
  • During the previous 4 years (2021-2024), median earnings at the Bar increased for both men and women. However, women’s earnings increased by less than men’s. This means the gap is still increasing

The event will explore a range of themes from a number of perspectives, including the experiences of those instructing barristers, insights from the clerks room, and the expectations of clients. We are very fortunate to be joined by Kelly Quinn KC from the New Zealand bar, who will share perspectives from New Zealand in addressing similar issues, and the equitable briefing policies in place there.

Contributions to the discussion from attendees (both in-person and online) are encouraged.

The roundtable will commence at 6:00 pm, to be followed by a drinks reception from 7.15pm, to which all participants are warmly invited. The event is free and and available to ALBA members only.

Registration will close at 6pm on 3 March.
